INTRODUCTION
COBOL was developed in 1959 by a group called CODASYL (COnference on DAta SYstem Language).
First COBOL Compiler was released in 1962.
First ANSI approved version in 1968. i.e. COBOL-68.
Revised ANSI approved version in 1974. i.e. COBOL-74.
Latest version of COBOL in 1985. i.e. COBOL-85.
It is developed mainly for business applications like banking, insurance, etc..
COBOL is known as a structured programming language, because it allows programmers to divide the modules and put them into different paragraphs in a more efficient way.
Features of COBOL:
- Suitable for Business Applications.
- It can efficiently handle large volume of Data.
- Very much English like Language.
- Platform independent. (i.e. execute on any OS)
- It is very lengthy coding programming language.
- It can not be used for scientific calculations.
